Local Authors, Self Published Works and Unsolicited Materials
SELF-PUBLISHED MATERIALS
The inclusion of independently or self-published materials, including those produced through vanity press services, will be considered based on the merits of the work and must meet the selection criteria outlined in the library’s materials selection policy.
Works by local authors, defined as current or former residents of Wayne County or surrounding counties, as well as works with regional interest, may receive special consideration. The best way to bring an item to the library’s attention is by submitting a Local Author Submission form, available at the library or on the library’s website.
Self-published titles are more likely to be added to the collection, pending staff review, if they have been reviewed in a recognized professional review journal, such as Library Journal, School Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, Booklist, or Publisher’s Weekly.
If accepted, a single copy of the work will be added to the Main Library’s collection and will be subject to standard collection maintenance and weeding procedures. If the item is not being donated, it must be available for purchase through one of the library’s regular vendors in order to be considered for addition to the collection.
Self-published eBooks are not considered unless they are available for purchase through one of the library’s existing eBook platforms.
UNSOLICITED MATERIALS
The library does not pay for unsolicited material. Materials sent to the library become the property of the Wayne County Public Library and, if not added, will not be returned to the donor.
GIFTS
Gifts are welcomed with the understanding that the library may dispose of them as necessary. Gifts added to the collection should generally have the same qualifications as purchases.
